Welcome
to Historic Woodlawn Cemetery
where winter is a season of glorious
beauty.
Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is the final resting place of 65,000 individuals including many of Toledo's most prominent families. The cemetery, which is celebrating its 133rd anniversary, still includes 47 acres of undeveloped land. It continues to be an active cemetery with more than ample space for its next 133 years. Founded in 1876, Woodlawn Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its development paralleled the growth of Toledo for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Although Woodlawn was considered an outstanding example of the "rural cemetery movement" when it's gates first opened, the city's expansion gradually transformed it into a quiet natural retreat well within the city limits. Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is home to more than 300 species of trees making it one of the finest arboretums in northwest Ohio. Its 160 verdant, wooded acres also provide a nesting habitat to a rich variety of birds. Woodlawn contains many architectural landmarks including the area's most extensive collection of private mausoleums, which are part of the rich history that attracts genealogists and history buffs to the cemetery.
