August 20, 2001 --I know you have heard this before. Today I drove down the road to the cemetery which is in such a state you can't even see the entrance gate. I spent about 2 hours just in the front and sides of the gate to the road. I never knew there could be so many weeds! I shall return during the week to complete the front and then I shall enter the cemetery and continue as far back as I can. Note: The people who drive by and look as I work away must think I am a bit off. I am -- who cares -- I like to pull weeds.
9 May 2001- I could not have planned it better. What a beautiful day! I walked down to the cemetery with Prince, a wreath, and rake in hand.
I knew that it was not going to be an easy job as I approached the site. Winter always has its way of showing itself long after it is gone. Twigs, branches, sand, and weeds were in abundance. I worked for an hour just to clear the front a bit and to be able to open the small gate. I really could have spent mega hours just in doing the heavy weeding.
Prince is a sweetheart tied to the gate and swallowing dust. He shall get an apple when we get home for his patient nature.
I hung the grapevine and magnolia wreath which I made this morning and that should last the seasons of Spring and Summer. It is placed on one side of the gate. It was very quiet and sunny as I did this. All the stones were standing tall even the ones that were toppled over or hiding amongst the weeds. Remember Mother's Day and Memorial Day. One Civil War Veteran is Van Nort, William H. (ABT. 1837- 1 August 1865) Aged 28 years CO. H. 100 N.Y. Vol.
Material has been updated with more information. 1/24/00
Please note: Due to the poor conditions of the cemetery headstones I can not confirm 100% accuracy.
Cemetery -- From my Guest Book.(bc) What a beautiful place you created! I am a Budlong descendant and it was so sweet of you to take notice of the cemetery on Reservoir Rd. and give out the names. The Budlong's descendent from Frances Budlong of Warwick, RI. He and his family were killed during the King Philip Wars in 1675 and they had a four year old son named John who was the only to survive. Family history states that all Budlong's descend from the little boy, John. He was supposedly captured by an Indian squaw and traded for pumpkins at Wickford. This child is mentioned in a letter to the Governor of RI by Roger Williams.
Update: We drove by the Cemetery as we made our way home from an outing. I glanced to see if everything appeared alright. To my surprise upon the iron gate was a lonely flower pot with about 4 stems standing tall -- a gift from the heart -- all is well -- so I said good night.
From Laurie --Thank you for all of your hard work on the cemetery!
Thought you might like to know some of the history of the Budlong's buried near you. I am not a direct descendant of David, however, his father, (Daniel was the brother) to my descendant.
David Budlong was born May 24, 1763 in Warwick, RI. ( Stephen Budlong born April 3, 1798 died January 8, 1817 was his son.) he was the son of Daniel Budlong and Rebecca Davis. His father, Daniel was the son of John Budlong and Isabel Potter. John was the sole survivor of an Indian Massacre of King Philip's War of 1675. Therefore, all existing Budlongs today are said to have descended from John. Source: Oneida County Gen Web site.
